In secondo luogo, bisogna prestare attenzione alla qualità e all'autenticità dello specchio.

Authentic Italian Mirrors And Faithful Reproductions

In the 16th century, Venetian mirrors were typically owned only by royalty, or the those in the wealthiest households. Today, consumers have the opportunity to purchase authentic Italian Venetian mirrors, which are still hand-crafted by master artists of Venice. These master craftsmen continue to add many (and sometimes all) of the details by hand, including the traditional ornate etching. These mirrors may have some of the traditional gold inlay, and many have distinctive beveled edges, all crafted by the artisan.

Reproductions of Venetian style mirrors makes use of more modern mirror-making techniques, primarily in the making of the actual mirrored surfaces. Back in the 16th century, the crystal clear reflective quality of the authentic Venetian glass mirrors was unparalleled, whereas today, high quality mirrors are affordable and widely made. The details in many instances are still added by hand. The use of mercury has been replaced with other liquid metals, like silver nitrate. Reproductions continue to use precious metals, high quality glass, beautiful etchings, and distinctive shapes. These mirrors are created by skilled experts, so the word “reproduction”, should in no way, be understood as something negative.

Mirrors today, as in the 16th century, offer light, brightness, and a decorative touch to any room. Whether purchasing an luxurious Italian Venetian mirror, or a reproduction, the purpose and function of the mirror remains the same. The ornate nature of a Venetian mirror may not fit the design aesthetics of every household, but for the right spot, in the right room, these mirrors offer a distinct and luxurious flare.

Use Venetian Decor To Spice Up Your Living Room

There are two dominate styles when decorating a Venetian living room: contemporary Venetian and historic Venetian. Although these two styles are rooted in the same vein, they are very different with a little cross over.
Both styles share a love for rich vibrant colors. With a contemporary Venetian living room a bold red couch and luxurious curtains blend well with tables with clean lines. Faux-stone, subtle patterns, and earth tones can set off pieces of staple furniture in daring colors. With a historic Venetian living room, wood furniture with carved and painted detailing will be right at home. Baroque furniture fits with historic Venetian decor while Baroque-esque fits with contemporary Venetian decor.

There is one important thing to remember with both styles: the opulence is in the details. Use mirrors that have ornate scroll work; chandeliers made from fine crystal or, for those on a tight budget, what looks like fine crystal; and ornate wall hangings to add opulence.

Always allow as much natural light as possible.

When you’re decorating a Venetian living room, remember the rich history and culture of Venice. Faith, family, and food shape the culture and the spirit of those concepts should come through in decor. The scroll work connected to Victorian style furniture is pretty much standard scroll work. The scroll work connected to Venetian style is reminiscence of grape vines. The lines twist and curve amongst itself and at times will double-back over itself.

No discussion about Venetian decor would be complete without addressing the masks. Venetian masks harkens back to a centuries old tradition associated with the Carnival of Venice. They come in five different types. The bauta is a full face mask with no mouth opening, but the chin would be pointed up which allows the wearer to eat and drink in anonymity. The volto or larva mask is predominately white. It is meant to be reminiscent of ghosts. The moretta hasn’t been commonly worn since the mid to late 1700’s. It’s characterized by a veil that falls over the mask. The columbine is a half mask. The plague doctor or medico della peste are the masks with the long beak-like protuberance. These masks are essential to any Venetian living room.

One final note, don’t go overboard with the opulence. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in the beauty of the decor for a Venetian living room, but that will overwhelm a room. This is especially true for a contemporary look. Pick a few select pieces such as a bar, buffet, curtains, and/or the coffee and end tables to carry the heart of the style. Then, balance out that with a few subtle pieces such as an Italian leather couch or chair with clean lines.

Ideas For A Romantic Venetian Bedroom

The bedroom should be a place of refuge and retreat. Inspired by the classical charm of old-world Venice, a Venetian bedroom will give you the feel of far away Italian luxury within the reach of your own four walls.

With a little effort, you can begin the transformation with a faux plaster finish on your bedroom walls. Begin with a thin layer and allow it to dry. Follow up with a thicker layer, adding texture by using a small trowel and working lines in the finish to create the look of an ancient stucco wall. Apply a warm golden paint color to the walls. This is the basis of your romantic Venetian bedroom. Crown molding installed around the top of the plastered walls will add an architectural feel to the space.

A few pieces of older, distressed furniture will give the room a touch of grace. Look for pieces with deep, rich earth tones, or refinish a few if you have the time. Add elements of texture to the furniture where possible. For example, a faux Italian tapestry table runner atop a large dresser or even a book laden wooden bookcase gives the room the sense of depth and richness essential to Venetian design.
Adorn the bed with a deep wine colored comforter and several pillows in matching or jewel toned colors add texture and warmth to the bed. The wine color will work with the golden hue of the faux plaster walls to add a touch of soft elegance.

For the wall decor, look for a large framed mirror to serve as a focal point for one wall. You can add touches of Venetian class by applying a gilded finish to the frame. Accent the framed mirror with a pair of metal sconces on either side. For other wall pieces, nothing compares with the traditional comedy-tragedy masks to offset Venetian style.

Other touches around the room may include rich red and golden hued dresser scarves, metallic lamps or candle holders, as well as natural stone. Even a few inexpensive red or deep golden candles help tie together the look of your Venetian bedroom.
For the floor, jewel tones in deep reds work well with the gold tint in the faux plaster walls. The lighting should be soft and elegant, opt for smaller lamps over a large overhead light of chandelier.

For a finishing touch, add one glass of your favorite Italian wine as you sink into the classic luxury of your old world Venetian bedroom.

An Introduction To Venetian Interior Design

In an effort to buck the current trend of planned communities with cookie-cutter houses decked out in matching decor, some home owners are searching for ways to personalize the living spaces within their modern homes. When it comes to interior design, there are numerous different styles plus an almost infinite number of variations on popular themes. Yet many home owners, wanting an option that is both tasteful and unique, are discovering the simple pleasures of decorating in the Venetian style.

While Venetian blinds have long been a must-have window treatment in well-appointed homes, there are a great many other ways to bring Venetian elegance and beauty into any room. Placing a Venetian mirror in a bedroom or hallway adds style and depth beyond what most wall hangings can offer. Venetian mirrors are manufactured with techniques that were kept secret for centuries by the artisans who made them. Placing gold leaf in the mirror to create decorative designs, and using lead to produce a pure white look in the glass, the craftsmen of Venice set the standard which all other mirror manufacturers would strive in vain to reach. Today’s Venetian mirrors are based on the centuries-old techniques, exhibiting the same quality workmanship as the mirrors of yesterday.

Venetian mirrors come in a variety of designs, each one a work of art, and all intended to reflect the taste and grace of the owner. Venetian mirrors work particularly well in places with low light, capturing and enhancing all ambient light to bring a graceful glow into any living space.

Another method of bringing that charming Venetian atmosphere into your home is to apply Venetian plaster to the walls. Venetian plaster is much more than a simple wall treatment. Decorative Venetian plaster has the look and warmth of polished marble, lending your Venetian style home the proper authenticity of true Italian craftsmanship. With made-to-order color schemes and application techniques that have truly endured the test of time, Venetian plaster works with almost any interior design style. From rustic earth tones to more modern and innovative hues, Venetian plaster will hug your walls with vibrant color and surround you with the feel of marble’s strength and permanence.

The final touch in creating a true Venetian atmosphere is to add elegant Venetian furniture. The furniture designated as Venetian during the 18th and 19th centuries was impressively ornate and flamboyantly luxurious, crafted of richly polished woods with intricate inlays and burnished finishes. Any room instantly becomes cozy and charming when furniture crafted in the Venetian style moves in.

When planning your living space, you want to surround yourself with the style and quality that fits your taste. Venetian interior design provides old-world craftsmanship to suit modern demands for timeless elegance.

The Venetian Mask – Still As Popular As Ever

The mysterious Venetian mask became popular centuries ago when they were used to protect the identity of the wearer. While wearing the mask a person could act different than normal, maybe even outrageous, and be protected by being anonymous. The Venetian masks are best known for being worn during the Carnevale, the Carnival of Venice. These masks come in a variety of types, colors and trims. Traditionally Venetian masks are very ornate with bright jewel tone colors and decorated in a very complex style. Mask markers in Venetian made these spectacular masks form papier-mâché and decorated them with wild combinations of fur, rhinestones, fabric, exotic bird feathers, gems and ribbons.

Venetian masks can be full-face masks such as the bauta or eye masks like the Columbina. The masks became a symbol of freedom, as everyone was an equal when wearing a mask. Even today, formal balls with Venetian masks are very popular. Wearing the masks at the ball make it easy to envision how it must have been centuries ago when masks first became popular. While the beautiful Venetian masks continue to dazzle visitors to the Carnevale, they have found another purpose. Today they are also very popular when used as wall decorations.

Regardless of your home décor, Venetian masks can add a brilliantly colored focal point. With the wide variety of masks, you are sure to find some that will fit in your home. The masks come in every color of the rainbow and the trims are as varied as your imagination. Venetian masks can be found in deep rich colors for traditional room designs or in bright primary colors for a sudden splash of color that is sure to be noticed. They also come in softer colors to match a romantic theme. Some people have found a Venetian mask that they loved so much that they designed a room around it. So when you decide to redecorate consider adding a Venetian mask to your home.

A Venetian Style Bathroom

Creating an elegant Venetian bathroom is one of the more exciting design projects to take on, especially when you are re-designing an existing bathroom that is dull and drab. From the fixtures to the decorations, when finished, the bathroom will show like a work of art.

If the space you are designing is small, your best option is to go with a pedestal sink. The pedestal sink takes very little space and allows more room for a toilet and shower. Pedestal sinks come in a variety of Venetian-influenced designs and are most commonly made from vitreous china. It is also easy to find toilets that match the pedestal sinks. Try pairing a matching commode with a wall-hung tank for a more European look. Use broad-striped wallpaper alternating between thin lines of gold and larger stripes of cornflower blue and contrasting floral trim along the top border. Add an ornate gold-framed rectangular mirror, Venetian gold light fixtures, and gold faucet and handles to create an elegant Venetian bathroom design for a small space.

If you have more room to work with and are designing or re-designing a full-size Venetian bathroom, there are several more options to consider. Starting with a dark wood Venetian vanity, a good pairing would be a white marble counter-top with built-in basin. A white commode with matching tank and a matching bidet would again give the bathroom a more European look. For a more unusual and elegant touch, instead of installing a built-in basin atop the vanity, consider installing a vessel sink. Vessel sinks come in hundreds of designs and colors. Pairing the vanity with a medium-blue vessel or a deep red vessel with gold inlays would work perfectly in a Venetian-themed bathroom.

Flooring is a very important consideration when designing a Venetian bathroom. To add a look of timeless elegance, choose a marble floor tile that contains Venetian glass within it. This type of marble tile comes in many base colors such as white, black, grey and off-white. Using a white-based tile for the larger bathroom will make it look more spacious, while using black for the smaller bathroom will give it a more intimate feel.

Again, ornate gold light fixtures and mirrors are a given. If using a fabric shower curtain, make sure that it has gold accent curtain holders. A dark background with a floral or striped design, making sure the fabric is rich-looking and not gaudy, will complete the look.

The most important thing to keep in mind when planning a Venetian bathroom design is that this particular design scheme leans toward the ornate and, therefore, the richer looking the wood, the shinier the faucets, and the more expensive-looking the flooring, the more beautiful the bathroom will be.
